High Court Upholds Assange's Extradition Order

Breaking News: US Can Seek Assange's Extradition

Key Points:

  • British High Court rules in favor of Assange's extradition to the US.
  • Assange faces 18 charges under the Espionage Act for WikiLeaks' mass release of confidential information.
  • Two judges will decide on Tuesday whether Assange's request to appeal the extradition order will be granted.

The British High Court in London has ruled that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange can be extradited to the United States on charges related to the mass release of classified information.

Assange, 52, is wanted in the US on 18 charges, nearly all under the Espionage Act, for his role in WikiLeaks' publication of hundreds of thousands of leaked diplomatic cables and military documents in 2010. The charges carry a maximum sentence of 175 years in prison.

Assange has been in a UK prison since 2019 and was not present in court for the ruling due to illness. His legal team is expected to appeal the extradition order to the UK Supreme Court.

The High Court's decision is a major victory for the US government, which has been seeking Assange's extradition for years. However, the case is far from over, as Assange's legal team is likely to continue to fight the extradition order.
