Fitness not an issue for Wanderers signing Juan Mata

Mata arrives in Sydney to seal Wanderers move

Spanish playmaker Juan Mata has arrived in Sydney to seal a move to Western Sydney Wanderers, with the club confident he will be fit to make his debut in the coming weeks.

Mata, 34, has been a free agent since leaving Manchester United at the end of last season and has been linked with a number of clubs around the world, including in Saudi Arabia and the United States.

Mata has been training with Manchester United's reserves in recent weeks to maintain his fitness and is expected to be available for selection for the Wanderers' next match, against Melbourne City on January 7.

"I'm very excited to be here," Mata said upon his arrival in Sydney.

"I've heard a lot about the Wanderers and the A-League, and I'm looking forward to being a part of it.

"I'm confident that I can still contribute to a team and help the Wanderers achieve success."

Wanderers coach Mark Rudan said he was delighted to have secured the services of a player of Mata's caliber.

"Juan is a world-class player with a wealth of experience," Rudan said.

"He's a great addition to our squad and I'm sure he will be a valuable asset to the club.

"He's a very fit player and he's been training hard in recent weeks, so I'm confident he will be ready to play in the coming weeks."

Mata is expected to undergo a medical on Monday before signing a contract with the Wanderers.

He will become the club's highest-profile signing since Alessandro Del Piero joined in 2012.
