A North Korean defector has shared a harrowing tale of how her father carried her paraplegic mother on his back for days to escape the country's oppressive regime. The defector, identified only as Ji, told Al Jazeera that her family had been facing persecution in the DPRK and decided to flee after her father lost his job.

Despite the immense physical challenge, Ji's father was determined to save his family. He carried her mother, who had been paralyzed in a car accident years earlier, on his back for days, navigating through rugged terrain and harsh weather. Ji recalled how her father would rest only at night, sleeping on the ground with his wife cradled in his arms.
