Biden Hopes to Secure Release of American Teacher Held in Russia
Marc Fogel Sentenced to 14 Years for Possession of Marijuana
President Joe Biden expressed hope on Friday that U.S. officials will be able to secure the release of Marc Fogel, an American teacher who has been imprisoned in Russia since 2021. Fogel was sentenced to 14 years in prison for possession of 06 ounces of medical marijuana that he had been prescribed for chronic pain. His arrest and conviction have been widely condemned by U.S. officials and human rights groups.
In a statement, Biden said that "the United States government is deeply concerned about the arbitrary detention and sentencing of Marc Fogel. We continue to urge the Russian government to release Mr. Fogel and all other U.S. citizens who are unjustly detained in Russia."
